Though a staple in the world of Southern traditional music, the song “I Wish I Was A Mole in the Ground” is most closely associated with Bascam Lamar Lunsford, who first recorded it in 1924.
Lunsford was a singing banjo player, back in a time when singing banjo players were the predominant species of banjoists.
That species took a hit during the mid to latter part of the 20th century, thanks in part to the growing popularity of the old time jam and its penchant for vocal-free fiddle tunes, as well as the resource destruction wrought by the introduction of the invasive species known as the singing guitarist.
By the early 21st century, the singing banjoist teetered on the precipice of extinction, creating a dangerous dearth of ecological diversity. In recent years, however, encouraging signs of species recovery have begun to emerge.
