It comes as no surprise that Rocky Top is at or near the top of the list of the most requested songs in this series. So for those of you who submitted such a request…the wait is over!
And while this one is most often shoved under the “bluegrass” umbrella, there’s no reason whatsoever that it can’t also be picked in a downpickin’ manner. Those barriers need to be broken, anyhow.

Some of my earliest exposures to the traditional southern music were at festivals of various sorts in my home state of Georgia.
Part of that tradition seemed to include naming the festival for a local flower (Marigold, Yellow Daisy, Apple Blossom, etc.).
Another staple of the prototypical Southern arts and music festival, circa 1975-1985, was a live performance of this week’s song, “Rocky Top.” And more often than not, delivered by a precocious young female singer.
So while many of you likely associate Rocky Top with Bobby Osborne’s iconic vocal, for me I’ll always have young female lead etched into my memory banks. Fortunately, I have one of those at home, and recruited her vocal services for this performance!

Notes on the Tab
In this arrangement, I’ve tabbed out the part I play in the banjo “solo,” as well as the vocal backup I play on the banjo while singing.
Notes in parentheses are “skip” notes – to learn more about skips and syncopated skips, check out my video lesson on the subject.
