Josh, When you accompany your singing in these songs are you using the standard bum ditty, where you hit a single note followed by brush/thumb or or you just strumming twice and then following with a thumb? I am enjoying learning how to play the banjo. Thanks for all these great lessons and examples.
Hey Dennis – I’d typically utilize the standard bum ditty for a basic accompaniment pattern. Thanks for the question!
In the first note of the third measure of You Are My Sunshine, the tab shows the open third string in the level 1 version, but the open fourth string in the level 2 version. I think the third string sounds better. Which one is correct? Or is the answer to that the correct one for me is the one I like better?
Great course and materials; thanks Josh.
Most people have probably already figured this out, but in measure 3 of the level 2 arrangement you could play the third fret of the third string instead of the second fret of the third string (as written). I think this is the note in the original tune and, anyways, gives it a kind of bluesy feel.
(In the level 1 arrangement tab this would happen in the second measure.)
It’s actually kind of fun, playing around with that note, and working it with the second string one fret down and doing a harmony progression down the keyboard, if you know what I mean — Cap
Having trouble stretching the middle finger on the 2nd string for the Partial D chord. I find it easier using the ring finger, and the pinkie for the note on the 4th string. Is this a bad habit to get into and should I persevere with the tab as written?
Nope, the ring and pinkie are perfectly fine there, too. 🙂
Josh really enjoying going threw the course , I’m still working on Level l, I don’t think I will ever get to performance speed, I am doing a couple of songs at Moderate speed . It takes me 20 minutes to calm down before I can actually
start practicing . Im 82 years old which means nothing I have a hard time with
2/4 time I have to count it in 4/4 time. Still having a hard time making a C Chord
so I Hold my finger up from 4th string and put it down when I need that in the song. Hoping I can improve with practice.
