Stay all night and don’t go home,
Stay all night and don’t go home,
Down in North Carolina
“Waterbound,” aka “Stay All Night,” is one of those traditional numbers with a double identity. One that’s oftentimes played as an instrumental fiddle tune in jams, but one that also doubles as an equally great song.
A song with lyrics about extending a bit of Southern hospitality to a houseguest who can’t make the journey back home safely due to floodwaters.
I’m playing it here in standard G tuning, gDGBD, so that I can sing it in the more vocally comfortable key of G. In jam circles, you’re more liable to encounter it in the key of A, so in those situations just tune up to aEAC#E and you’re all set.
