Let’s go crawdad hunting!
This week’s song, Crawdad Hole, with its appeal to ears of all ages, is always a crowd favorite. It’s also a great song to tackle if you’re just getting started playing and singing – just 16 bars long, perfectly suited to standard G tuning with a minimum of fretting hand maneuvering needed.
Plus, learn this one and you’ll get a bonus song, as “Froggy Went A Courtin'” uses the exact same melody. It’s a 2-for-1!

Notes on the Tab
In the tab above, you’ll note I’ve tabbed out both a “lead break” (something to play in between verses) and the “vocal backup” (what I play while I’m singing).
Notes in parentheses are “skip” notes – to learn more about skips and syncopated skips, check out my video lesson on the subject.

Josh, this great! Do you by any chance have the words for the Froggy Went a Courting version of this tune?
Thanks! Here’s a link to the lyrics from Doc Watson’s version: http://artists.letssingit.com/doc-watson-lyrics-froggie-went-a-courtin-369ghhw#axzz3zsZhO7c9
You mean I don’t have to pay for expert advice like this an?omrey!
He doesn’t look like a photo I have of their father around the same time. He wasn’t a heavy man in my photo. I don’t know what their grandfather looked like. Wonder if I can google him.
I learned
Froggie went a court’n he did go unhuh
Froggie went a court’n he did go oh yeah
Froggie went down a crawdad hole un huh oh yes sireee
You get a line and I’ll get a pole babe
You get a line and I’ll get a pole hone
You get a line and I’ll get a pole
AND we’ll go fishing down the crawdad hole unhuh oh yes sireee
But I can’t find those verses
“Froggie went a courtin'” and “Crawdad Hole” are usually treated as different songs (even though the melody is identical).
Thanks for doing this one. It’s definitely fun! When I used to sing it* with my Mom as a kid, we always sang it slower and more laid back. I think your rendition might have almost been too fast for your backup singer. 😎
*along with She’ll Be Coming ‘Round The Mountain, Oh Susanna, and a bunch of other classic sing-alongs
Thanks, Paul – it’s definitely hard not to crank this one up fast!
Thanks alot – your answer solved all my problems after several days stinlggrug
Has anyone conceived a baby naturally with a ?My husband has poor motility but a very high . I am completely normal. We have only been trying for a year – should we keep trying for a bit longer or go straight to IVF? I have just had a fallopian tube test that can apparently for the following four months – should we keep trying naturally until after that point? Has anyone had a natural pregnancy after one of those tests? Your personal experiences would be most appreciated.
Love how you sing with your daughter! 🙂
yahoooooo ! thank you
It’s precious how she watches you. And she’s the spitt’n image of you. Very nice.
Fantastic Josh…father n daughter duet – what a joy. How do you get them to see the light?
Ha! I used to play this with a bluegrass band in the 80’s!
Your daughters harmony is spot on. I loved it. Are you teaching her to play anything?
Yep, another three mile smile. That is great! And as usual, Jules is awesome!
This one might need the “slow downer” machine for me to study it a bit, but its a keeper for sure.
Awesome. Sounds a little like “Beer Run” (B double E double R U N, Beer Run).
I’ve never heard that before–but now it’s the only way I’m going to be able to hear this song:

“…all we need is a ten and a fiver/and a car/and a key/and a sober driver…”
Ha! Wasn’t familiar with that one…may have to wait a few more years to sing it with Jules. 😉
I just hope whoeevr writes these keeps writing more!
Alright alright alright that’s exactly what I needed!
Great Josh. Brilliant!
Thx
